ANCIENT GREECE
unwomaned "corpse map"-giver station

We lost so many in just one day
the oldest was Lyssa, born on 12 September 06
just two days older than TinTin
The youngest was Taisie, barely rezzed on 3 June 09
two months after LadyKath and Vaneeesa

We loved them all in their time
we miss them more than words can express

The Joy of Getting Yelled At

IndexScheduleCastDesignersGalleristsStaffPartners

I was talking to an SL artist today... who's work, at least on a formal level, is pretty interesting. In my aesthetic take, their conceptual ideas were fairly obvious, perhaps rewarding to a casual observer, but not running as deep as I thought the interesting formal technique might be able to be taken.

I almost gave the artist some critical feedback, but managed to shut my mouth before I did. It wasn't my really sense that the artist was interested in critical discourse, rather, more that the artist was interested in being congratulated.

Yelling Season Begins February 1st from Nataliedee

When you go to art grad school, it's almost guaranteed that the work you make when you leave, will not be the same as the work you made when you came in. Hopefully this is a good thing. If you really like the work you're making now -- my advice -- don't go to grad school!

Some institutions are famous for screaming at artists, others use a somewhat gentler hand, but either way, it's really a process of critical self-analysis. There's a lot of "have you read this," "did you think about that," "you probably need to look at these works,"...

What I didn't fully appreciate until today when I shut my mouth before giving this artist what, in my mind, would have been helpful feedback that might have assisted in taking their work to a deeper, richer, more compelling place, is that grad school is one of the few places where anybody actually wants feedback.

Out here the general attitude is, "I am artist, worship my genius." In grad school it's "you are shit, let's at least try to make it interesting shit! :P

I'm not a fan of scream therapy... but I'm also not a fan of my-work-is-too-brilliant-and-perfect-to-be-dissected. I'd love to see more critical discourse in this little world of ours.

Do virtual avatars die?
Physical typists do!
And one way or another, virtual avatars leave this world all the time.

Yet, here in SL we are probably MORE in denial of death than even in RL.

On 7 November, VB/C will drape their elegant corpses around Ancient Greece, Ancient Egypt, Atlantis, Stonehenge... all in the extraordinary sim that is Petruchio.

On arrival, visitors will receive a "hunt map" and "memory box." The map tells you how many corpses to look for in each landscape, and the memory box lets you collect the memory bottles you'll find by the side of each corpse. The memory bottles contain words, images, and even the corpse's death pose, so visitors can lie in solidarity with the deceased.

Artist: Hippocrates

IndexScheduleCastDesignersGalleristsStaffPartners

kk - he was actually a physician, but he said one of the most famous things ever said about art, 2,450 or so years ago:

Ars longa, vita brevis

Life is short... art endures...

We cry when the Taliban destroys ancient Buddhas...
We'll spare no expense to eek a few more years out of the Mona Lisa

It's a remarkably beautiful sentiment.

Well, except, OUR art DOESN'T!!!

Ours is a performance art company that makes ephemeral art. We "document" it with 2D images and temporal videos (machinimas) but the art is entirely fleeting. In fact it's site-specific work and we don't perform the same piece twice.

You have to be there.

It's a live experience.

Yes, the lag sucks... still... we hope it's a small price to pay... for a, we hope, timeless experience...

VB Previz #28 - Running Fence

I know it's been done IRL, but how amazing it would be to do this out of avatars holding hands! I guess if we wanted to cross a 256-meter SIM, it'd take, like, uh, 256 avatars!?

The logistics of this boggle my mind. But what a "performance." We really need to find a way to make this happen. Perhaps for the company's 1-year anniversary in April 2010?

Oh... and then there's the sim's "agent limit" -- hmm -- we'd have to find a place with water, and/or a sim-crossing. If it's a 60-agent sim, then find a 60-meter peninsula to "run."

The logistics of this boggle my mind.

Gotta do it.
